Skating on the Canal

photo by: Ken W. Watson, 1997

Looking north along the canal we can see the majestic spires of Canada's Parliament buildings on the left and the impressive Chateau Laurier Hotel on the right. In winter, 7.8 kilometres of the canal in Ottawa becomes the world's longest skating rink. The canal in this section is maintained by the National Capital Commission, who flood and groom the surface to maintain it in perfect skating condition. The Rideau skateway is also the central focus of Ottawa's winter festival, Winterlude, held on the first three weekends of February.
