Davis Lock in Winter

photo by: Ken W. Watson, 1999

The lockstations can be lovely places to visit in the winter, a blanket of clean white snow setting off the buildings and stonework.

In this photo we see the lock on the left, drained, the lower gates open, the lockstation house beside the lock and then on the right, the lockmaster's house with a commanding view of both approaches to the lock. There is open water in the picture because the weir, out of view to the right of the lockmaster's house, continues to let water through and the current prevents ice from forming.
