When the word "summer" comes to mind, we think of warm weather, swimming, boating and having fun at the cottage. However, one of those fun things that can harm the environment is the operation of boats. Did you know that more than 85,000 boats pass through the Rideau Canal's locks each summer? The problem is that too many of these boats are causing a lot of damage to the shoreline. Boats make waves, and big waves cause big damage, not only to the natural environment, but also to the safety of others. Our waterways can no longer handle the pace of modern use and abuse that we are forcing on them. You can help us face this new environmental challenge and have fun at the same time. Together we can start to reverse the trend. It is all just a matter of time, effort and attitude. Next time you are in a boat, take a look behind you. Is the boat making any large waves? These waves are the result of the boat wake. Wake can cause damage to the shoreline. The information in this booklet will help you and your family reduce the boat wake and, in turn, protect shoreline habitat, keep our lakes healthy and improve boat safety. next page 1 Jasper Avenue Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada, K7A 4B5 Tel : 613 - 283 - 5810. email: info@rideaufriends.com
