A familiar sight to boaters is the friendly Parks Canada staff turning the crank on a hand winch, known as a "crab". These hand winches are used both to open the gates and also to open some of the sluice valves that let water into the lock.
When not "cranking a crab" you'll find lockstaff working hard to make sure the lockstation is looking clean and tidy or taking time to talk to visitors about all aspects of the Rideau.
