Construction History of the Rideau Canal Part of our Resources for the Rideau series, this digital book is a reprint of Parks Canada's Manuscript Report 193, "Construction History of the Rideau Canal" by Karen Price, 1976. Covering the 1826-1832 construction period of the Rideau Canal, Karen Price, in this 335 page research document, provides us with transcribed excerpts from Lt. Colonel John By’s yearly reports detailing the work done and costs incurred at each work site. In addition to Colonel By’s official reports, Karen has included various letters from Colonel By to his superiors as well as extracts from reports by others such as Lt. Edward Frome, R.E., and surveyor/overseer of works John Burrows. This digital book will be of interest to anyone wishing to read first hand reports of the work done at each lockstation. The document is heavily cited and endnoted, the sources (mostly Library and Archives Canada) clearly detailed. This digital book is fully searchable text (not page scans) that duplicates the original manuscript report. It is provided on a CD-ROM, in PDF format, easily read by the free Adobe PDF Reader. Most computers already have a PDF reader installed, but if not, you can easily obtain the reader from the Adobe website.
